CBD for Cats: What You Need to Know

CBD is a remedy that’s gaining traction for a number of different creatures and conditions. Research continues to grow in support of CBD for addressing unwanted symptoms in dogs, and of course, humans. But what about CBD for cats? Here’s everything you need to know.

Should I ask my veterinarian?

In a word, yes! You should always consult a professional, especially for medical advice. Both you and your vet can come to a consensus about what treatment is best for your cat. That being said, your vet only interacts with your cat in a controlled environment for a short time. If your cat tends to act up only at home, you’re the best judge of how severe their “tantrums” or bad behavior is. It’s also likely that your cat has separation anxiety. You can discuss this condition in greater detail with your veterinarian. You’re always welcome to a second opinion, too.

What symptoms can CBD help?

Although some vets don’t currently prescribe CBD for cats, patient-reported success and further studies will likely change this. After all, CBD is:

  • An all-natural, if not organic or single-source remedy (depending on the brand)
  • Humans, dogs, and cats, all have endocannabinoid systems, and each is wired the same way
  • It can be much more affordable than prescriptions

In cats, CBD can likely address the same symptoms as humans and dogs. Most notably, giving your cat CBD can help:

  • Pain: If your cat has arthritis, CBD may offer the same benefits as it has in humans.
  • Inflammation: If your cat is an outdoor cat, or experiences skin irritation, giving them CBD oil may help. Inflammation is often a multifaceted symptom. If your cat is experiencing skin inflammation, there’s a good chance their stomach may be upset, too.
  • Anxiety: If your cat is hyperactive, or, conversely, too shy, CBD may help.
  • Aggression
  • Allergies
  • Appetite regulation

What side effects are there?

Two of the main side effects of CBD for cats are gastrointestinal upset and sedation. What does this mean? You may notice your cat having irregular bowel movements or throwing up. This is the body’s natural reaction to something that doesn’t agree with it. Isn’t sedation a good thing? If you’re giving your cat CBD to calm their attitude, turning them into a drowsy, lethargic shell of themself isn’t ideal, either. Sedating your cat probably isn’t what you had in mind if you’re trying to help them be more social, on the other hand. In this case, simply try a different strength, or the time of day you give your cat CBD.

The good thing about giving your cat CBD is that side effects are temporary. Simply discontinue the use of CBD if your cat experiences any poor reactions. You can always try a smaller serving or a different brand. When starting your cat on CBD, always try the lowest recommended serving and strength. Consult your veterinarian if any adverse reactions continue.

What’s the best way to give my cat CBD?

You know how good (or fussy) of a patient your cat is. Just like for humans, there are many easy ways to incorporate CBD into your cat’s diet. Opt for tinctures or oils to keep it simple. If your cat is OK with being handled, dispense the dropper right into your cat’s mouth as you would for yourself.

Don’t think they’ll sit still? Add oil on top of food, mix it into wet food, or even drop a few drops in your cat’s water. Make sure you purchase a pet formula, as some essential oils are harmful to cats. Choose a lower strength to begin, and it’s a safe bet to go with something unflavored. You can even get adventurous and opt for fun flavors like tuna! In this case, though, you probably won’t be fighting your cat for it. Want your cat’s CBD to seem even more special? Choose CBD treats just for cats.
